:: LCD / Touch Monitor ::

Current monitor works but is too expensive, has a plastic touch surface (which scratches) and is not bright enough @ full sun. Power supply is also inefficient.

Goal to build Monitor Enclosure to simplify and reduce cost


  • Select LCD panel (daylight brightness

  • Design and fabricate enclosure

  • Electronics

    • Power supply

    • Auto-dim (reduce brightness and power consumption at night)

  • Waterproof enclosure

  • Touch surface high durability (glass front)


Note, this could be combined with the CommsBox below, to create a single unit, like:


CommsBox v3 (formerly Top Box)

The CommsBox contains all the added bits that make a user terminal:

  • USB Hub

  • Webcam

  • Audio amplifier w/ volume control

  • Headphone port

  • Speakers

  • Microphone

  • On/Off switch

  • Power breakout (12v to audio amp, hub, monitor)

  • USB to keyboard / touchpad / touch / user device

Version 2 of the Comms Box is good, but needs some improvements still:

  • Regulated power supply

  • Power protection (fuse, relay)

  • Component placement / wiring plan

There is the possibility of creating a custom PCB to provide whats needed here, including a usb3-pcie bridge + low power GPU chip… this would be bigger project, but huge for Project Hello World (and might be broadly applicable for other education projects using Linux MultiSeat). Proposed block diagram here:

Virgin and Qualcomm building satellite-based internet provider - great news for Hello Hubs!

Network connectivity will continue to be one of the biggest challanges for building Hello Hub's in disconnected locations. Richard Branson announced today a project to provide worldwide network coverage by a new array of satellites, via his Virgin Group & Qualcomm. We're stoked... more connectivity options = easier Hello Hub builds.

Rapid build, flat pack, 4-post Hello Hub - overturning calculation

We are exploring the adoption of a new foundation option for Hello Hubs. We like the 4 post structure, but the current specification calls for a below-grade portion for each "post" (picture below), to provide stability and to resist overturning of the structure during high winds.

(standard Hello Hub steel frame structure, with sub-grade post foundation)

Option 1: Top Bar, in the case of fully-enclosed touch display and rugged keyboard.

  • Steel or Alumunium, rear panel is gasketed and fully removable.
  • Wire grommet at bottom for ethernet & power.
  • Square indicates area for mounting motherboard up to mini itx in size.

Say hello to Huzaifa Lawal, Hello Hub user in Suleja Nigeria

Am very impressed with the Hello Hub because I can learn how to type and I have access to the internet for free through the Hello Hub. I usually visit the hub 5 times a week. My favorite activities on the Hello Hub are typing, playing games and browsing the Internet. My future dream is to be a qualified medical doctor to help the people of my country Nigeria.”


Rural development remains a concern of many developing countries despite impressive advances in technology and increase in intensive developmental policies. Sustainable development and poverty alleviation in rural areas depend on effective common resources management and local governance. A successful example of NGOs promoting economic activity in the local environment and lifting ignorance off people’s life is Project Hello World in Suleja community of Niger State, Nigeria. The ten months old project in Suleja, is a proven success and one that has reached children in the school system, community members, district and community leaders- Christians and Muslims alike. .

Hello Hubs on Epicure & Culture

Attempts to educate underprivileged children and youth in rural areas without access to schooling area nothing new. There are many people and organizations who admirably want to help and showcase the importance of education; however, the issue becomes not only finding a solution that works, but also finding one that is sustainable and responsible. While Project Hello World still has a long way to go before they conquer the problem of eliminating the issue of lack of education, they’ve found a successful beginning in Nigeria... for full article:

Here's an updated design render, based on the Hello Hub installed in Suleja, Nigeria.

Big changes from prior versions:

  • Foundation footprint is 3' x 3' (instead of 2' x 4')
  • Electronics combined into one large enclosure
  • Battery safety cover included
  • Speaker/Periphrial bar shown
  • Children's bench is shown lower
  • Power safety shut-off's are shown.
